Implementing the Principles of Responsible Management Education: Examining Understandings of Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability

Abstract:
Sustainability is an increasingly important topic for both business practitioners and management scholars. In an effort to facilitate the development of research and curriculum addressing sustainability, the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME), a cooperative effort between the United Nations, the AACSB, and other organizations was established. The goal of the collaboration is to establish sustainability into the core teaching and scholarly activities of schools of business. To effectively assure learning about this topic, we must first establish a baseline of student and practitioner understanding and familiarity with related, specific issues surrounding economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Three studies were conducted; across all three we found that few students or executives have an omnibus understanding of sustainability. Their tendency is to define sustainability as long-term financial success. This interpretation of business success as profitability can be expanded through current efforts under PRME to interweave sustainability education throughout the business curriculum.
