Topic: Social Entrepreneurship – Implications for Management Practice
Summary: The state’s reduced role in the provision of social services and the increasing entrepreneurial approach of third sector organizations have led to the rise of “social entrepreneurship” which has become a “practical response to unmet societal needs”. Social entrepreneurs address unmet societal needs by entrepreneurial means, putting an emphasis on societal value creation first and on financial value creation second.
At the same time different societal actors ask entrepreneurs and corporations to manage more responsibly and to increase the social and environmental performance of their enterprises. This raises the question of what mainstream entrepreneurs, managers and organizations can learn from social entrepreneurs. This question builds the backbone for this special issue.
As research in the field of social entrepreneurship is in an early development stage and empirical research has been limited to single case study observations, this special issue is particularly interested in a thorough review of research to date, empirically verified claims which lead to recommendations for mainstream theories of entrepreneurship and organizational learning as well as management practice. Topics to be considered include, but are not limited to the following:
• Review of the academic field on social entrepreneurship
• The measures of success of social entrepreneurship
• Profitable social entrepreneurship
• Innovation and social entrepreneurship
• The Enabling Environment for Social Entrepreneurs (e.g. Institutional support by Ashoka, Schwab, Skoll and others)
• Comparative case studies of social entrepreneurs
• Social entrepreneurship and organizational learning
